John Glen (1891) finds the earliest appearance of the tune in print in Biography:John Riddell's A Collection of the Most Favourite Scots Tunes (1782, p. 18). However, the reel appeared earlier in Edinburgh music publisher Neil Stewart's Collection of the Newest and Best Reels or Country Dances (variously dated 1761 or 1775, p. 22).
Admiral George Stewart, 8th Earl of Galloway KT (1768–1834) was styled Lord Garlies between 1773 and 1806, and was a British naval commander and politician.
