Composed by Fiddlin' Bob Larkan (1867-1942) and named in honor of his home in Hazen, Prairie County, central Arkansas. Larkan was born in New York City to and Irish father and English mother, and developed musical habits early, playing banjo, guitar and violin. The family moved to Boone County, Missouri, where he met and married his wife Hattie (Harriet) and then moved to Tollville and then Hazen, both in Prairie County, Arkansas. They had a large family of nine daughters and five sons, many of whom became musicians and were formed into a family band. Meanwhile, Larkan developed a local reputation as a fiddler and won state contests in Arkansas in 1927 and 1928. His family band played radio shows and local venues, and for a time helped to sell quack medicine for the notorious John R. Brinkley over KFKB in Milford Kansas. Larkan's asthma worsened as time went on, curtailing the band's activities, and he died of the malady in 1942. Larkan was also a sportsman who ran the state's trapshooting contest. His name is sometimes misspelled "Larkin".
