MISS NICOL OF STONEHAVEN'S MINUET. Scottish, Minuet (3/4 time). E Flat Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AA'B. Perhaps the daughter of William Nicol M.D. (1765-1827), who studied in Aberdeen and became a Doctor of Medicine in 1803, in the meantime serving in the Royal Navy as a surgeon's mate. Later he was appointed Surgeon to the flagship H.M.S. Leander, and saw a good deal of life in Lisbon, Gibraltar, Naples, Malta and elsewhere. He recorded his experiences in a diary and letter to his father. In 1794 he married Margaret Dyce, only surviving child of a merchant and burgess of Aberdeen. The couple had several surviving daughters: Jane (1795-1841), Mary (1797-1867), Margaret (1799-1860), Elizabeth (1802-1868), and Christina (1811-1845). Some of the daughters may have been dance or music pupils of dancing master and musician biography:Archibald Duff."
