TURF HOUSE REEL. Irish, Reel (whole time). D Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AB. The tune was composed by Patrick Street member Ged Foley. It is similar tunes in the large tune family. One version of a tune, usually played in the key of ‘G’, is called “Mayo Lasses” (Breathnach, CRE 1, 80) and “Old Maids of Galway (The)” (O’Neill, DMI 654). Kerry fiddlers Denis Murphy and Julia Clifford recorded it as "Johnny when you die" [1]. Cape Breton fiddlers known it as "West Mabou Reel (The),” sometimes attributed to Dan Beaton {Domhnull Iain an Táillear} (1856-1919), although it is probably Irish in origin. See note for “annotation:Johnny When You Die (1)."
