SLEEPY LOU. American, Country Rag (cut time). USA, Virginia. C Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). One part (Milliner-Koken, Phillips); AA'BB' (Devil's Box). The tune was recorded in 1927 by Uncle Dave Macon's Fruit Jar Drinkers, featuring fiddlers Mazy Todd, a neighbor of Macon's, and Kirk McGee. Like the Fruit Jar Drinkers, Virginia fiddler John Ashby and his group The Free State Ramblers played this tune fast, almost at reel tempo, but it is at heart a country rag tune. Ashby's version is recognizably the same tune, albeit distanced from Todd's original.
