Source Bill Driver [2] (1859-1985), an African-American fiddler from Miller County, central Mo., had no name for the tune; presumably R.P. Christeson supplied "Cuckoo Hornpipe." Christeson first heard Driver play in 1928, but didn't start recording him until 1948, and even then had to transcribe Driver's tunes from memory as many of his wire recordings were stolen in 1966. Christeson thought much of his playing, and described him as "gifted with talent, had a keen ear, steady time, and played vigorously," qualities that made him an excellent dance fiddler.
