SPIRIT OF 1881. American, Hornpipe (2/4 time). A Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AABB. 'The Spirit of 1881' is a rather nebulous title, but it may refer to the aftermath of the election of 1880, in which Republican candidate James Garfield was elected as the United States' 20th President after nine terms in the U.S. House of Representatives. He assumed the Presidency in January, 1881, and was impactful but cut short after 200 days when he was assassinated.
