WORRELL'S HORNPIPE. American, Hornpipe (2/4 time). B Flat Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AABB. The title perhaps refers to William Worrell and/or his three daughters, Sophie, Irene and Jennie, who performed in their youth with their father and later as an act on their own. In 1867 the Worrells advertised "ballads, duets, single and duo dances, jigs, reels, and hornpipes" in addition to banjo solos. The started in 1851 with Nathan's Circus and were in San Francisco in 1857 with Lee and Marshall Circus, billed as the "Juvenile Graces" (where perhaps they came into contact with minstrel performer George H. Coes). A few years later they toured Australia with their father, returning to San Francisco. By 1867 they had moved east to perform in a number of plays in New York and Provicence, and leased a theater in New York where they gave performances. Each married in the early 1870's.
