Kerr declares the tune's provenance to be "Irish," but there is little of Irish character in it. In fact, the tune is an early 19th century English air and country dance tune by composer Franz Joseph Haydn called "Lord Cathcart" or "Lord Cathcart's Favorite." Kerr also prints the tune as "Air by Haydn" in vol. 3 of his Merry Melodies.
