TEMPLE RAKES, THE. English, Jig (12/8 time). G Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AABB. The melody first appears in print in John Johnson’s 200 Favourite Country Dances (London, 1756). The Temple Rakes, or Innocence Preserved by 'anonymous' was published in 1735, a title that referred to the unruly gatherings of young gentlemen, who generally engaged in drinking and whoring, but who also could gather for organized gangs who vandalized and perpetrated assaults. The Mohocks were on such group that terrorized the populace around Charing Cross in the early 18th century.
