GIGUE CANADIENNE [1] (Canadian Jig). AKA and see "Hennessey's Hornpipe (3)." French-Canadian, Reel. G Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AA'BB': AABB'A' (Duval). The melody was originally recorded by Joseph Allard [1] [2], in 1928, in which he used a Stroh violin, for additional volume. The melody is a version of "Cuckoo (1) (The)/Cuckoo Hornpipe," recorded in 1921 by Sligo-born fiddler Michael Coleman under the title "Murray's Fancy (1)." According to Allard researcher Jean Duval, Allard's title for the tune was "Gigue d'Emery", a name that honored his son, Emery (then aged 29), who was also a fiddler^[1].

"Hennessey's Hornpipe (3)", recorded in 1934 by Cape Breton fiddler Angus Chisholm, is quite close to Allard's "Gigue Canadienne [1]," save in hornpipe rhythm.
