GREEN FLAG (IS) FLYING, THE. AKA - "Green Flag (2) (The)," "Green Flag Flying Before Us (The)." Irish, March (2/4 time). G Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AB (Shields/Goodman, Stanford/Petrie): AABB (Cole, O'Neill). O'Neill (1913) lists this as one of the "splendid martial airs" of Irish music. Early versions can be found in the music manuscript collections of collector Henry Hudson (1798-1889) and Church of Ireland cleric James Goodman, both from the mid-19th century. Goodman (1828-1896) was an uilleann piper, and an Irish speaker who collected locally in County Cork and elsewhere in Munster. He also obtained tunes from manuscripts and printed collections.
