Johnson (1984) states the tune was composed by an anonymous fiddler undoubtedly in the autumn of 1787, to celebrate the opening of the South Bridge. The alternate title was a renaming of the piece by Nathaniel Gow, who dedicated it to a patron hunting or dancing organization.
