SMOKY MOKES. American, Cakewalk or Two Step (2/4 or cut time). USA; Missouri, Nebraska. C Major ('A' and 'B' parts), F Major ('C' part). Standard tuning (fiddle). ABC. "Smoky Mokes" was composed in 1899 by Tim-Pan-Alley composer Abe Holzmann (1874-1939), and was described as a two-step and cakewalk. 'Mokes' is a derogatory term for Blacks, and there were lyrics in dialect to the tune (which is usually heard as an instrumental). The very popular end of the century cakewalk was a favorite of the John Phillip Souza band.
