COBBLER [3], THE. AKA and see "Blue Ribbon Polka (2)," "Din Tarrant's (9)," "High Point Polka (2)," "Din Tarrant's No. 1," "O'Keeffe's Polka (2)," "Tarrant's [2]." Irish, Polka (2/4 time). Ireland, Sliabh Luachra region of the Cork-Kerry border. B Minor/Dorian. Standard tuning (fiddle). AABB. Sliabh Luachra accordion player Johnny O'Leary (1923-2004) thought Kerry musicians Julia and Billy Clifford responsible the the title. However, it has been suggested the title may refer to peripatetic fiddle teacher and sometimes shoe-mender Tadgh Ó Buachalla, also known as Tadhgín an Asail, Tadeen the Fiddler and Tadeen the Cobbler[1]. Tadgh, of Park, Knocknagree, was active in Sliabh Luachra in the latter half of the 19th century and was a teacher of Din Tarrant and Tom Billy Murphy (Julia Clifford's brother). His favored mode of transportation was astride a donkey.
O'Leary paired the tune with either "I Won't Marry Her" or "Dan Sweeney's." Versions also in E Minor (see "Blue Ribbon Polka [2]").
