SCOLDING WIFE [7]. American, Reel (cut time). A Major. AEac# tuning (fiddle). ABB'C. "Scolding Wife [7]" was performed by William biography:Marion Reece of Zionsville, western North Carolina, and recorded by John Lomax in July, 1936, for the Library of Congress (AFS 837, A5. Lomax misspelled the performer's name as "Rees"). According to Joe Wilson [1], Reece was a blacksmith by trade whose home and shop was north of Boone, on the North Carolina border near Johnson County, Tenn. Reece also played the fife and had an instrument handed down from his grandfather, who brought it home with him after the Civil War [Wilson maintains the Reece family were largely Union sympathizers, or "Mountain Yankees"].
Beisswenger et al note that the tune could be considered in the mixolydian mode, and also point out the fourth scale note ('D') is always played sharp when played in the upper range (d'), and always played natural in the lower range (D).
