Originally an English march, published by Charles and Samuel Thompson in London in 1765 in their Compleat Collection of 200 Favourite Country Dances, vol. 2 as "Captain Reed's Delight." The Buffs, or the 3rd Regiment of Foot, was a line infantry regiment of the British Army and one of the oldest, dating to 1572. They were originally raised in the English county of Kent.
