The melody was printed in London by Daniel Wright in his Extraordinary Collection of Pleasant and Merry Humours, etc. (1713). Curiously, the first two strains were collected more than a century later in Ireland by Irish musician and music collector John Edward Pigot (1822–1871) as "Sheep-Shearers (The)."
