B Flat Major (Baty): D Major (O'Connor, O'Neill). Standard tuning (fiddle). AABB. "Jack's the Lad" was entered into the mid-19th century music manuscript collection formerly owned by Northumbrian musician John Batty (p. 31). The hornpipe was also entered into Book 2 of County Leitrim fiddler and piper biography:Stephen Grier's c. 1883 music manuscript collection, and in the c. 1909 music manuscript in the possession of curate and fiddler biography:Rev. Luke Donnellan, Oriel region, south Ulster (with the alternate title "New College Hornpipe"). The title appears in a list of tunes in his repertoire brought by Philip Goodman, the last professional and traditional piper in Farney, Louth, to the Feis Ceoil in Belfast in 1898 (Breathnach, 1997).
