Kerry, Ireland, where it is known as one of the “Doon Reels” (from the playing of Sliabh Luachra fiddle master Pádraig O’Keeffe {1887-1963}, who played six reels—‘from Doon’—one after the other) and where it sometimes goes by the title “Doon Reel.” Sliabh Luachra (Co. Kerry) fiddlers Denis Murphy (1910-1974) and Julia Clifford (1914-1963) recorded it as “Mulvihill's Reel” on their album “Kerry Fiddles,” referring to Bronx, New York, accordion player Charlie Mulvihill. Paddy Cronin recorded the tune on a 78 RPM disc about 1952, and the melody sometimes bears his name (“Paddy Cronin's Reel”). Similarly, flute player Mike Rafferty played the tune with Paddy’s brother, fiddler Johnny Cronin, and sometimes called the tune “Johnny Cronin's Fancy.” There is a related, untitled, reel in Breathnach’s CRÉ V (1999, No. 201, p. 96). O’Neill’s “Magpie's Nest (The)” could be considered a distant variant.
