SMASH THE WINDOWS [3]. Irish, English(?); Dance Tune (2/4 time). D Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AABB. "Smash the Windows (3)" appears in the section of 'English Airs' in Howe's Musician's Omnibus (c. 1863), although his authority for assigning that provenance is unknown. A similar, though not exact, version with the same title was entered into the c. 1909 music manuscript collection of Oriel region, south Ulster, curate and fiddler biography:Rev. Luke Donnellan. However, as Donnellan researcher Conor Ward points out, "Smash the Windows (3)" is but a duple-time setting of the 6/8 time jig "Smash the Windows (1)." The Donnellan version, notes Conor, clearly shows the source for the tune in the ms. was playing it in 6/8 but was misinterpreted as 4/4 time.
