L'ARMANDINE. AKA and see "Valse Armandine," "Valse Claire," "Valse Denise (La)," "Valse florissante." French-Canadian, Waltz (3/4 time). C Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AABB'CC'. "L'Armandine" or "Valse Armandine" was recorded by fiddler Fortunat Malouin in 1928 (Columbia 34179-F). Researcher Jean Duval suspects it is a Malouin composition, as Armandine was the name of his daughter; alternatively, Duval points to the trio structure and considers the tune was originally salon music. The tune as printed in J.A. Boucher's 1933 collection is similar to that recorded by Malouin. The waltz proved popular and was recorded several times, albeit under different names. Les Trois Copains (led by Arthur Pigeon on accordion) recorded a version in 1939 as "Valse Claire" (Starr 16239), by Montreal fiddler Isidore Soucy in 1941 as "Valse florissante," and by Tommy Duchesne as ""Valse Denise (La)."
