MRS. FARQUHARSON (OF MONALTRIE’S) STRATHSPEY. Scottish, Strathspey. B Flat Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AAB. Composed by Kirkmichael, Perthshire, fiddler Robert Petrie. It appears in his Second Collection of Strathspey Reels and Country Dances (1795), dedicated to his patron and employer, Mrs. Garden of Troup. "Mrs. Farquharson of Monaltrie" was the dedicatee of Petrie's first collection (c. 1790), and probably refers to Margaret Garden, who, in 1791, married William Farquharson of Monaltrie, a man twenty years her senior. Margaret's father was one Peter Garden, son of Peter Garden 3rd of Troup. Margaret survived her husband by some thirty hears, and died in 1857.
