REEL DES COMMÈRES (Gossip's Reel). French-Canadian, Barn Dance (2/4 time). F Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AABB. Despite the word 'reel' in the title this tune is more akin to a barn dance. Researcher Jean Duval finds the tune under the title "Gigue à Pelletier," in Boucher's 1927 unpublished music manuscript, the precursor to his 1933 published collection[1]. The provenance of the tune is unknown. A version of the first strain melody can be heard in the Irish barn dance "Old Blackguard (2) (The)," recorded by accordion player Jerry O'Brien in the mid-20th century, and a Norwegian variant is known as "Reinlender etter Adolf Reitlo."

  1. Duval found many of the tune titles had been changed from the 1927 collection to the 1927 volume.
