I WON'T BE A NUN [1] (Ni Mait Liom Beid Beanriagalta). AKA and see "Brian Boru's Slow March," "Officer on Guard (The)/Officer of the Guard (The)," "Governor Taylor's March," "O'Sullivan the Great," "Tyrone's Ditches." Irish, March (4/4 time). G Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). ABC. "I Won't be a Nun [1]" is a member of a large family of marches, hornpipes and airs. The complete title is “I’ll Go and I’ll Marry and I Won’t be a Nun,” from a Victorian era song set to an older melody. As "Letter that He Longed For Never Came (The)", it was recorded by County Cork singer Elizabeth Cronin (1879-1956). Pipers recorded it under O'Neill's title, "I Won't Be a Nun", as by Patsy Touhey on a cylindar by Capt. Francis O'Neill, and by Seamus Ennis as "O'Sullivan the Great".
