ROLE THE RUMPLE SAWNY. Scottish, English; Country Dance or Reel (cut time). D Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AB. The tune was printed in Daniel Wright's Aria di Camera (London, 1727, No. 75), and in the numerous publications of John Walsh-- Second Collection of Thirty New and Choice Country Dances set for the Harpsichord or Spinnet (London, c. 1730), The Lady's Banquet. Fourth Book (c. 1734), and Third Book of the Compleat Country Dancing-Master (London, 1735 and 1749, p. 109). "Role the Rumple Sawny" is the ancestral tune for a large family of tunes in Scotland, Ireland, England and the United States--see note for "Humors of Ballyconnell (1) (The)" for more.
