The melody and country dance instructions were originally published in R. Baldwin's periodical The London Magazine; or The Monthly Intelligencer of June, 1751. It next appears in John Walsh's Compleat Country Dancing Master, vol. 5 (London, 1754), and later by Charles and Samuel Thompson in their Compleat Collection, vol. 3 (London, 1773). "Bonny Kate of Aberdeen" can also be found in the music manuscript collections of London musician Thomas Hammersley (1790), and fiddlers John and William Pitt Turner (Norwich, Conn., 1780).
