ALLONBY LASSES. AKA - "Alonby Lasses." AKA and see "Flagon (The)." English, Reel (cut time). G Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AAB. The tune was entered into the c. 1825 music manuscript collection of the Browne family, Troutbeck, in the old county of Westmoreland in the English Lake District. It now is located in the relatively new county of Cumbria. The manuscripts are apparently the work of different individuals over time, with the Browne family the last owners of the book before they were collected and donated to the Armitt Library, where they are kept today.
"Allonby Lasses" is a version of the reel usually known as "Flagon (The)." The second strain is cognate with the second strain of Canon James Goodman's "Touch Her if You Dare." Fr. John Quinn also finds a cognate in "Drunken Reel (2) (The)" from the 1883 music manuscript collection of Stephen Grier, of Gortletteragh, Co. Leitrim.
