BURFORD RACES. English, Jig. D Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AABB. The melody appears in Thompson's Twenty Four Country Dances for the Year 1767, and Thompson's Compleat Collection of 200 Favourite Country Dances, vol. 3 (London, c. 1773), and in James Gillespie Manuscript (1768, Perth). It also appears in the music manuscript copybook of Henry Beck (1786), and in the large mid-19th century manuscript collection of Manchester, England, musician biography:John Roose. The Burford Races, Oxfordshire, were one of England's earliest major horse races, established by the 'Merry Monarch', Charles II.
