Joseph Eastburn Winner was born in Philadelphia in 1837. He operated a publishing business there from 1854 to 1907. He wrote "Little Brown Jug" in 1869. He sometimes used the pseudonym R. A. Eastburn on his compositions. His older brother Septimus was also a prominent composer of popular music. Joseph died in 1918.
