NEW ORLEANS. AKA and see "Shady Grove." Old-Time, Breakdown. USA, West Virginia. A Mixolydian. Standard tuning (fiddle). AB. A moderately-paced version of "Shady Grove" from Braxton County, West Virginia, fiddler Melvin Wine. Fiddler Shawn Craver learned a similar version from Western Maryland fiddler Grover Broadwater. Wine's name for the tune comes from the song lyric, "I'll put my knapsack on my back, my rifle on my shoulder, and away I'll go to New Orleans and there I'll be a soldier."
