SUN BEAMS [2], THE. English, Country Dance Tune (cut time). F Major. Standard tuning (fiddler). AAB. The melody was published in Charles and Samuel Thompson’s Compleat Collection of 200 Favourite Country Dances (vol. 3, 1773) and Longman and Broderip’s Compleat Collection of 200 Favourite Country Dances (London, 1781). It also appears in the 1770 music manuscript collection of Northumbrian musician William Vickers (about who unfortunately little is known), and the 1780 commonplace book of fiddlers John and William Pitt Turner (Norwich, Conn.). "The Sun Beams" was also entered into the very early 19th century music manuscript of fife player John Buttery, who joined the 34th Regiment in Lincoln as an adolescent and spent the next 19 year in the army. He survived, and, as an older man, emigrated to the Province of Ontario (taking his music manuscript with him). Likewise, it can be found in the large mid-19th century music manuscript collection of Manchester, England, musician biography:John Roose.
