Biographical notes

J. R. Findlater was a civil engineer who lived at Broughty Ferry near Dundee. He, together with other residents of that town, spearheaded the revival of interest in Scottish music in the 1850s, organising annual concerts of Scottish fiddle music (the first of their kind) at that place between 1850 and 1852. In addition, he was an adjudicator at a Scottish violin competition in 1856, and presented one of Niel Gow's fiddles to Duncan M'Kercher in 1851.
