LADY ELGIN'S COURTSHIP. AKA and see "Lady Madelina Sinclair's Birthday," "Lady Madelina Palmer." Scottish, Reel. B Flat Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). ABB. The tune appears as "Lady Elgin's Courtship" only in the American Ryan/Cole publications, and is not to be found under this title in Scottish collections. However, the tune was originally composed by famed Aberdeenshire fiddler-composer William Marshall as "Lady Madelina Sinclair's Birthday," named for the 2nd daughter of the 4th Duke and Duchess of Gordon. It was re-set as a strathsepy and renamed "Lady Madelina Palmer's Strathspey (1)" when the widowed Madelina remarried. Compare also with the popular Irish reel "Boyne Hunt (1)."
