SIR WILFRID/WILFRED LAURIER MARCH. AKA - "Marche Sir Wilfrid Laurier," "Quadrille Sir Wilfrid Laurier." French-Canadian, March (6/8 or 12/8 time). B Flat Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AA'BB' (Hinds): AA'BB'C (Carlin). "Good for 48 bar Canadian square figures” (Hinds). The tune was recorded in December, 1928, in Montreal by fiddler Joseph Allard and issued in 1929 as "Marche Sir Wilfrid Laurier." According to Allard researcher Jean Duval, Jean Carignan claimed to have heard his mentor Joseph Allard's father, Tenfant Allard, play this piece at the age of 99 (in 1938), suggesting to Duval that Joseph Allard is not the composer of this march[1]. Sir Wilfrid Laurier was Prime Minister of Canada from 1896-1911, and died in 1919, prior to Joseph Allard's moving back to Canada from the United States, notes Duval.
