MRS. GARDEN OF TROOP & GLENLYON'S STRATHSPEY. Scottish, Strathspey (cut time). F Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AAB. The melody appears in fiddler-composer biography:Robert Petrie's Fourth Collection (c. 1805), although he did not claim it (as he did with other tunes his collection). The wealthy Francis Garden-Campbell of Troup (sometimes 'Troop') and Glenlyon was his employer, and Petrie worked on the estate as a gardener and gameskeeper. He composed a number of tunes named in honor of the family. Mrs. Garden was born Penelope Smyth and was originally from Ballinatray, Ireland, and wed Francis in 1791. Petrie dedicated his Second Collection of Strathspey Reels and Country Dances (1796) to her.
