The melody appears in his Second Collection of Strathspey Reels and Country Dances (1796, p. 16). The title refers to Robert William Duff of Fetteresso (1767-1834), born at Logie, the son of Vice Admiral Robert Duff and Helen Duff. He commanded the Forfar Artillery and Kincardine Millitia for a period and was known as 'The Colonel' afterwards. As a young man aged 22, he married his stepsister and second cousin, Mary Morison, in Edinburgh in 1789, and together they raised at least eight children. Duff's birthday is unknown, only the year of his birth. Fetteresso Castle is a 14th-century tower house, rebuilt in 1761 as a Scottish Gothic style Palladian manor, about 17 miles south of Aberdeen.
