MISS BRANDER OF SPRINGFIELD. Scottish, Strathspey (whole time). D Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AAB. "Miss Brander of Springfield" was composed by James Taylor, a fiddler, composer and teacher of music in Elgin. Miss Brander was probably one of the daughters of Alexander Brander of Springfield[1], a banker and one of the principal proprietors in the parish of Elgin ("An honest man" according to his grave monument) and his wife Margaret Paterson. The daughters died fairly young: Mary died in 1841 at age 29, and Joanna died in 1858 at age 37.
