MISS MacDOWAL GRANT'S REEL. Scottish, Reel (cut time). A Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AAB. "Miss MacDowell Grant's Reel" was composed by Elgin fiddler-composer biography:Donald Grant and published in hisCollection of Strathspeys, Reels, Jigs &c. (1820-21). Since the reel follows Grant's strathspey "Arndilly House" it is likely the two were meant to be played as a pair, and that Miss MacDowal Grant was a member of the MacDowal Grant family of Arndilly. At the time of publication of Donald Grant's volume, Arndilly House was the seat of David McDowall Grant (1761-1841) of Arndilly, Banff and Barr House, Lochwinnoch, who was a Scottish naval officer, collector of customs and, briefly, Member of Parliament. In 1790 David married Eleanor Mary, daughter and heir of Col. Alexander Grant of Arndilly, taking the additional name of Grant. They had ten children, including four daughters, Elizabeth Graham Grant, Eleanora Frances Murray MacDowall, Joanna Maria Graham Grant, and Wilhelmina Day Graham Grant.
