First published in London publishers Charles and Samuel Thompson's Twenty Four Country Dances for the Year 1765 (No. 7, p. 4) and later in their Compleat Collection of 200 Favourite Country Dances vol. 4 (1780). "Merry Girls of Bristol" is contained in the mid-19th century music manuscript of William Winter[1] (1774-1861), a shoemaker and violin player who lived in West Bagborough in Somerset, southwest England. Northumbrian musician William Vickers included it in his 1770 music manuscript collection under the title "Bristol Lasses" [2].
