SYMLEN BEN BYS. Welsh, Air (whole time). A Minor. Standard tuning (fiddle). AABB. "Symlen ben bys" is contained in Musical and Poetical Relicks of the Welsh Bards, by wikipedia:Edward_Jones_(harpist) (1752 -1824), "Bardd y Brenin" (The King's Bard), a name he took in 1820 when his patron King George IV came to the throne. Jones maintained the airwas ‘a favourite Tune of the great Pastoral Poet Dafydd ab Gwilym, who florish’d about the Year 1400 … [he] wrote a Poem in its praise, wherein he informs us that he had learned to play it on his Harp’. The reference is unclear, and it is probably another of Jones's attempt to assign antiquity to a melody and to enhance its provenance by associating it with a famous Welsh bard.
