MR. OLIPHANT OF CONDIE'S. Scottish, Strathspey (whole time). G Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AAB. "Mr. Oliphant of Condies" was composed by Perthshire fiddler-composer biography:John Bowie, who also was a teacher and instrument tuner who later set up a shop in Perth along with his brother and held annual balls. He also composed "Mr. Oliphant of Condie's Welcome Home." At the time Bowie published his c. 1789 collection the tune title referred to Ebenezer Oliphant, 7th of Condie, who married Mary, third daughter of Sir William Stirling of Ardoch. Ebenezer was born in March, 1766, at Newton of Condie, Forgandenny, Perthshire. He was a subscriber to Bowie's c. 1789 volume. Bowie also composed a tunes in the collection for his sisters-in-law, Charlotte and Magdalene Stirling[1], and for the members of the extended Oliphant clan (see "Green Shades of Gask (The)", for one). He died on February 22, 1807[2].
