MONMOUTH, THE. AKA "or, The Victory". English, Country Dance Tune (whole time). B Flat Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AABBCC. "The Monmouth," subtitled "The Victory", refers to the Battle of Monmouth Court House (1778), New Jersey, during the American War of Independence. It is considered to be inconclusive and strategically irrelevant for both sides. The British protected their baggage train and continued with their march from Philadelphia to New York, while Washington was able to spin the engagement to Congress as a victory and consolidated his position as Commander-in-Chief of the Continental forces. As can be seen in the alternate title, the British attempted their own spin.
