CALLAGHAN'S (REEL) [1]. AKA and see "Doon Reel (1) (The)," "Galtee Rangers (The)." Irish, Reel. Ireland, County Kerry. D Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AB. Source O'Leary identified this as 'another Doon reel', and explained that all the Doon reels came from Cal Callaghan (1863-?), a fiddler and farmer in Doon (Doonasleen), Kerry, a student of 19th century fiddler and teacher Corney Drew, and a contemporary of fiddler Tom Billy Murphy. Callaghan also lived some twenty years in Ohio in the United States before returning to Ireland, and is thought to have picked up some musical influences from his time there[1]. Callaghan's maternal nephew was fiddler Pádraig O'Keeffe who lived for a time with the Callaghan family in Doon, learned his uncle's tunes and called them "Doon reels." "Callaghan's Reel [1]" has been called "a Kerry classic." Currently a set of three reels is popular in the south-west of Ireland, having been recorded in various combinations by the famous Sliabh Luachra fiddlers Julia Clifford, Denis Murphy and Pádraig O'Keeffe. It consists of "Galtee Rangers (The)," "Glountane Reel" and "Callaghans," and, says Paul de Grae, if you start "The Galtee Rangers" in a session, chances are that everyone will continue into the other two after it." Sliabh Luachra fiddle master Pádraig O'Keefe recorded "Callaghan's" in a medley along with "Quinn's" and "Woman of the House (The)."
