THORN, THE. English, Air (whole time). E Flat Major (Duff): D Mixolydian (Litten). Standard tuning (fiddle). One part (Duff, Litten): AB (Sumner). "The Thorn" was song with music by English composer William Shield (1748-1829) set to lyrics from John O'Keefe (1747-1833) and was quite popular in its day. "The Thorn" was included as the middle movement in Archibald Duff's "Pas Seul (3)" dance sequence, presumably arranged for a performance by one of his dance students, Miss Frances Urquhart.
