MARMOTTEUSE, LA (The Grumbler). French-Canadian, Reel (cut time). Canada; New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island, Québec. A Dorian. Standard tuning (fiddle). "La Marmotteuse" is one of a number of Acadian and Québécois tunes that go variously by the titles "Marmoteuse," "Grondeuse," "Growling Old Man, Grumbling Old Woman" and similar titles that have a high part followed by a low, "grumbling" part. The tunes are categorized as "grondeuses" and are often in ADae (raised bass) tuning on the fiddle, to emphasize the low, growling part with sympathetic resonance and droning.
