David Taylor (1992) remarks that the tune was named after Johnny Mickey Barry (?-1981), a renowned concertina player from Toureendarby, near Newmarket, in the Sliabh Luachra region. He was a student of renowned Lisheen musician Tom Billy Murphy's, from whom he received his core repertory. The polka was recorded in a set with the tune "Salmon Tails" by the Oyster Band and has occasionally been called "Salmon Tailing up the River (2)" as a result.
