GIBRALTER BALLOONS. English, Jig or March (6/8 time). D Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AABB. The melody appears to be unique to Glasgow publisher James Aird's Selection of Scotch, English, Irish and Foreign Airs, volume 3 (1788). The title may be a reference to pioneering balloonist Montgolfier's proposal that balloons might assist France's effort to seize Gibraltar from the English in 1782.
