According to the book Dear Old Illinois, this tune originally came from a woman named Cora Dye, who played the tune on the guitar.

A recording of Jim Reed playing it was taken June 14, 1972. The note from Dear Old Illinois says: "Learned by Mr. Reed from its namesake, a Benton area musician who was said to have played it on the guitar."
