John Glen (1891) finds the earliest printing of the tune in Ayshire fiddler-composer John Riddell's 1782 second collection (p. 35), issued by musician and music publisher James Aird in Glasgow. Greenvale was a small estate located between Perceton and Cunninghamhead in North Ayrshire, Scotland, and was held by Alexander Montgomerie at the time Riddell's second collection was published.
